Rocket League ditched the controversial loot boxes

Rocket League’s loot boxes are finally gone. The game’s latest patch removes the Crates, which once gave random loot to players that paid to unlock them, and replaces them with Blueprints, which will now give specific loot.

Developer Psyonix first added Crates to Rocket League back in 2016, around the height of the loot box boom in games. Despite the decline in favor that this particular form of micro-transactions has endured over the last several years, the item has remained in Rocket League. However, in August, Psyonix announced that it would be removing Crates in favor of a system that gave players a better idea of the loot they were paying for.

Rocket League developer Psyonix recently rolled out the big blueprints update to the game. The patch mainly overhauls how rewards are doled out. The most significant change in this update is the removal of loot boxes and their associated keys. Rocket League now awards blueprints to players as they play, which are used to unlock a specific item. In some cases, blueprints require a set cost of Credits (paid currency) to turn into an item. Psyonix first revealed plans to remove loot boxes over the summer but they aren’t the first to do so. In 2017, EA dialed back some of the pay-to-win elements in Star Wars: Battlefront II. Monolith a year later eliminated all microtransactions from Middle-earth: Shadow of War.

As GameSpot highlights, not everyone is happy with the changes. The publication points to a thread on Reddit that has garnered nearly 2,000 comments. Most seem outraged over the new pricing structure; should the debate gain additional momentum, Epic (who bought Psyonix earlier this year) may have to address the matter once again.
